Web Interface & Backhaul Setup

Connecting to the Gateway's local web UI, and configuring Wi-Fi or cellular backhaul.

Step 1: Connect to the Gateway's Access Point

The Gateway ships from the factory with Wi-Fi set to Access Point (AP) mode, so it can be reached directly from a laptop or phone before it's joined to any network. Look for a Wi-Fi network named viot-gateway-xxxxx (the xxxxx identifier varies per device), and connect using the password VandyamAP. The Gateway's hostname (e.g. viot-gateway-xxxxxx.local) is printed on the product label inside the SKU.

If the Gateway has already been configured into Wi-Fi Client mode (i.e. it's no longer broadcasting its own AP), use the Maintenance & Troubleshooting steps further down this page to put it back into AP mode before you can reach it this way.

Step 2 & 3: Access the Web Interface and Log In

  1. 1Open a browser and navigate to the Gateway's hostname, e.g. http://viot-gateway-xxxxxx.local
  2. 2Accept the browser's security certificate warning — the Gateway uses a self-signed certificate, so this is expected
  3. 3Log in with username root and password 123

Change the default password immediately

The default root / 123 login is the same across every unit until changed. Go to System → Administration → Router Password, enter the current password (123), set and confirm a new strong password, then click Save & Apply. Do this before the Gateway is exposed to any network beyond your direct AP connection.

Switching from AP Mode to Client Mode

The Gateway supports two ways to get it onto your actual network: a USB cellular dongle, or joining an existing Wi-Fi network directly.

  • USB dongle — connect the dongle to the Gateway's USB port; it will connect to the internet automatically and remain reachable via its hostname
  • Wi-Fi client mode — go to Network → Wireless, click Scan to list nearby networks, click Join Network next to the desired network, enter the Wi-Fi password in the WPA Passphrase field, set the Firewall Zone to LAN, then click Submit and Save

Cellular (4G) Backhaul Setup

To use a 4G SIM for backhaul, a modem driver package needs to be installed first: download the modem IPK file (modem-a7672s), go to System → Software in the Gateway's web interface, and use Upload Package to install it. After installation, reboot the Gateway from System → Reboot — a PPP interface will be created automatically once the modem joins the network. The SIM slot is located inside the enclosure. A blinking red status LED means the cellular connection is unstable or not yet established; a steady green LED means the Gateway has stable internet connectivity.
