What's the difference between a private and public gateway?
It's not a difference in the Gateway hardware itself — it's a difference in which LoRaWAN network server the Gateway is registered to. A private deployment uses a network server the customer (or Vandyam, on their behalf) controls; a public deployment uses a shared, third-party-operated network. Vandyam's documented offering today is the private deployment model, run on ChirpStack.
How many sensors can one gateway support?
The VIoT Gateway is rated for up to 10,000 connected nodes, making it suitable for very large deployments spanning industrial sites, campuses, or agricultural operations.
What happens if the power goes out?
The Gateway includes a built-in battery backup rated for up to 6 hours of continued operation, so short outages won't create a gap in data collection. For sites with longer or more frequent outages, a supplementary power source is recommended.
Does the gateway need Wi-Fi, or can it use a SIM card?
Either — the Gateway supports both Wi-Fi and 4G SIM backhaul, so it can be deployed in locations with existing network infrastructure as well as more remote sites that only have cellular coverage.
What network server does the gateway use?
ChirpStack v4.x, a widely used open-source LoRaWAN network server platform, consistent with the private-deployment model where the customer or Vandyam controls the full stack.
Is the gateway weatherproof?
Yes — the catalogue confirms an IP67 rating and an ABS plastic enclosure rated for -40°C to +70°C operation, making it suitable for continuous outdoor and industrial deployment.
