Introduction

What the VIoT Gateway is and where it fits in the Vandyam platform.

The Vandyam VIoT Gateway is the communication hub of the Vandyam wireless sensor network platform — it is the device that receives data from every VIoT Node in the field (RS-485 Nodes, 4-20mA Nodes, GPS Nodes, and others) over LoRaWAN, and forwards that data onward to a cloud or on-premise monitoring platform. Where a VIoT Node is built to interface with one instrument or one type of sensor, the Gateway is built to aggregate readings from potentially hundreds or thousands of nodes spread across a large site, and carry that data back to wherever it needs to go.

The Gateway is designed for outdoor, industrial-grade deployment: it is housed in an IP67-rated ABS enclosure rated for -40°C to +70°C operation, and includes a battery backup so that data collection can continue for a period even if mains power is interrupted — a meaningful reliability feature for sites where a power cut shouldn't mean a gap in the monitoring record. For its own backhaul connection to the internet, the Gateway supports both Wi-Fi and 4G SIM connectivity, so it can be deployed in locations with existing network infrastructure as well as more remote sites that only have cellular coverage.

On the sensor-facing side, the Gateway communicates over the 865 MHz LoRaWAN band and is rated to support up to 10,000 nodes, making it suitable for genuinely large-scale deployments — industrial campuses, agricultural operations, or multi-building sites — where a very large number of sensors need to report back through a single point of aggregation. Data received from nodes is passed to a network server (Vandyam's platform runs on ChirpStack v4.x) for processing, device management, and onward delivery to the application layer.
