The VIoT RS-485 Node is built as an externally powered industrial device rather than a battery-operated one. It draws power from a 12V DC supply, which is the standard input voltage across most industrial control panels, junction boxes, and PLC cabinets — so in the majority of installations the node can be wired straight into existing panel power without needing a dedicated power adapter.

To protect against the voltage fluctuations common on industrial sites — switching noise from nearby motors, voltage sag on long cable runs, or an installer accidentally wiring in a higher-voltage supply — the input line carries onboard over-voltage protection rated up to 35V DC. In addition, the input is protected against transient electrical surges using TVS (Transient Voltage Suppression) and ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) protection circuitry.

Unlike some competing RS485-to-LoRaWAN dataloggers on the market, which offer both an externally powered version and a separate long-life battery-powered version, Vandyam currently offers only the externally powered variant of the RS-485 Node. For remote or off-grid deployments, the node would need to be paired with a separate DC power source such as a solar panel and battery pack. A dedicated battery-powered variant is not part of the current product line, but is a natural extension for future development given how common truly remote deployments are in Vandyam's target industries.
