LoRaWAN Network Settings
Radio band, channels, activation type, and range.
The RS-485 Node communicates wirelessly with a Vandyam VIoT Gateway (or any LoRaWAN network server it has been registered against) using the 865 MHz frequency band allocated for LoRaWAN use in India, across three channels — 865.0625 MHz, 865.4025 MHz, and 865.9850 MHz — each using a 125 kHz channel bandwidth. Spreading communication across multiple channels reduces the chance of collisions between multiple devices transmitting at once and improves overall network reliability as more nodes are added.
Like other LoRaWAN end devices, each RS-485 Node joins the network using OTAA (Over-The-Air Activation), which relies on three unique identifiers programmed into the device at manufacture: a DevEUI, an AppEUI/JoinEUI, and an AppKey. This means devices don't need to be manually configured with network session keys before deployment — they authenticate and negotiate secure session keys automatically the first time they power on within range of a compatible gateway.
Up to 10km of communication distance under clear line-of-sight conditions (best case, per the internal catalogue). Real-world range will be considerably shorter in built-up, obstructed, or indoor environments, and depends heavily on gateway placement, antenna height, and physical obstruction.
